본고는 『근대 문학의 역학들－번역 주체･동아시아･식민지 제도』에 대한 서평으로, 일차 텍스트와 이차 텍스트 사이를 빈번히 왕래하는 이 책의 중요한 의의들을 재확인하는 데 주안점을 두었다. 번역을 ‘통해’ 번역과 창작 사이에서 이루어지는 상호텍스트성을 포착하고자 했던 저자의 분석을 살펴보는 과정에서, 동아시아라는 하나의 거대한 번역장에서 각국의 복합 주체들이 행했던 번역과 창작의 연속적인 실천들이 새로운 동아시아 근대문학사 서술의 요체임을 재인식할 수 있었다. 우리는 먼저 나도향의 『카르멘』 번역과 이와 같은 번역 체험이 그의 창작에 미친 영향 등을 다시 살펴보았고, 현진건이 옮긴 뤼시앙 데카브의 「나들이」 번역의 특징을 프랑스어 원문과의 비교, 검토를 통해 재조명했다. 이러한 ‘다시 읽기’는 저자의 분석과 전망의 타당성을 재확인하기 위한 것임과 동시에 이 책에 대한 유용한 또 하나의 보충 자료를 제시하기 위함이었다. 두 번째로는 저자의 후속 작업으로 예상되는 나도향이 번역한 모파상의 「추억」, 홍명희가 번역한 니노쉬빌리의 「명령」, 이유근이 번역한 「부채」를 택해 각 번역의 특징 및 주요 사항들을 검토했다. 그리고 이러한 ‘미리 읽기’를 통해, 창작에 반영되었을 반전과 아이러니 기법, 에스페란토 저본의 문제 등을 짚어보았다.
Abstract
This article is a critical review of Sohn Sung－jun’s The Dynamics of Modern Literature－Translation Subject, East Asia, and Colonial System, published in 2019. We have focused on reaffirming the important significance of this book, which frequently connects primary text and secondary texts. In the process of reviewing the author’s insightful analysis and prospects, who sought to capture the intertextuality between translation and creation by talking ‘through’ translation, we were able to recognize again that the continuous practices of translation and creation performed by the complex subjects of each country in East Asia are the essence for the description of the ‘New East Asian Modern Literature History’ that must be written in future. Our article is largely composed of two parts. First, we reexamined Mérimée’s Carmen translated by Na Do－hyang and the influence of such translation experience on his creation. Also, we reconsidered Lucien Descaves’s Le Jour de sortie translated by Hyun Gin－geon through comparison with the original French text. This re－reading was intended to reaffirm the validity of the analysis and interpretation made in this book, and to present another useful supplementary material for this book. Secondly, we selected three works that are expected to be the author’s follow－up work, the Souvenir of Maupassant translated by Na Do－hyang, the Order, a short story of Georgian writer Ninoshvili, translated by Hong Myung－hee, and La Dette translated by Lee You－geun. And through this ‘read in advance’, we could expect that the reversal and irony techniques that would have been reflected in the creation, the problem of Esperanto version as the basic text for translation, and the translation history of forgery will become future tasks.
