이 글은 15세기 런던으로 이주해 온 저지대 출신 수공업자들의 이주의 다양한 모습을 살펴본다. 저지대 출신 수공업자들은 직물, 가죽, 금속 가공, 양조업 등 다양한 분야에서 활약하며 런던 사회의 구성원으로 자리 잡았다. 저지대 출신 수공업자들과 경쟁하게 된 토착민들은 이주민 수공업자를 견제하려는 여러 청원을 진행했다. 정치적 혼란 역시 저지대 출신 수공업자의 이주에 영향을 주었다. 부르고뉴 공작의 배신은 부르고뉴 공작이 지배하던 저지대 출신 이주민에 대한 적대감을 키웠고, 장미전쟁은 저지대 출신 수공업자들에 대한 테러의 구실이 되기도 했다. 이주민에 대한 공격은 토착민의 불만을 해소시키며 지지를 얻어내는 수단이 되어주기도 했다. 하지만 이주민 수공업자들의 기술력은 런던 토착민에게 인정받았고 그들의 공정이 수용되는 모습도 있었다. 런던으로 이주해 온 저지대 출신 수공업자들은 런던 토착민들과 조우하고 갈등을 겪으며 런던 사회를 만들어 나갔다. 그리고 이들은 자신들의 기술력을 바탕으로 새로운 터전이 된 런던 산업의 양적·질적 성장에 영향을 주었다.
Abstract
This article examines the various aspects of the migration of artisans from the Low Countries to fifteenth-century London. These migrants became members of London by working in various fields such as textiles, leather, metalwork, and brewing. In competition with them, Londoners submitted numerous petitions to restrict the activities of immigrant artisans. Political turmoil also influenced the migration of artisans from the Low Countries. The betrayal of the duke of Burgundy intensified hostility toward migrants from the regions under his control, and the Wars of the Roses served as a pretext for acts of violence against them. Attacks on immigrants also functioned as a means for natives to vent their frustrations and gain political support. Nevertheless, the skills of immigrant artisans were acknowledged by natives, and their practices were at times adopted. Artisans from the Low Countries who settled in London encountered and clashed with the natives, yet played a role in shaping London. Through their craftsmanship, they contributed significantly to the quantitative and qualitative growth of London’s industries.
