Abstract

This study analyzes William T. Stead’s The Truth About Russia as an attempt to reconstruct the political and moral perceptions of the Russian Empire that were deeply entrenched in late nineteenth-century British society. Stead approaches Russia not only as a nation of economic opportunity but also as a potential moral subject, interpreting it through the governance philosophy of Alexander III, the diplomatic strategy of General Ignatieff, and the moral gospel of Tolstoy. He thus defines Russia as a “moral empire” - a complex political entity that embodies ethical possibility rather than posing a singular threat. In this reframing, Russia is no longer cast as an oppressive autocracy or civilizational ‘Other,’ but as a moral-political community comparable to the West. Within this framework, journalism serves not merely as a channel for factual reporting but as a practical medium for moral imagination and international understanding. Ultimately, this paper reveals that The Truth About Russia is not a conventional travelogue, but a product of Stead’s investigative journalistic practice - an ethical experiment aimed at dismantling entrenched British stereotypes and transforming public perception.
