Abstract
In retaliation to nationalisation and other radical economic policies implemented by Sirimavo Bandaranaike’s Sri Lankan government from 1970, the British government attempted to attain the support of the other member states of the World Bank’s Sri Lanka Aid Group to suspend foreign aid to Colombo until Bandaranike accepted what Britain deemed were necessary reform measures. However, the American insistence that Sri Lanka be helped by the West so that it could maintain a non-aligned position in the Indian Ocean region isolated Britain’s position within the Group and thus forced London to consider offering a relatively small amount of aid. However, convinced that any aid provided would not be put to good use, Britain called for the International Monetary Fund to apply pressure on Sri Lanka to accept the reforms in exchange for a standby loan. But Colombo’s blank refusal to accept such conditions – in addition to the announcement of Germany’s pledge of substantial aid to Sri Lanka- meant that Britain’s demands and warnings ultimately went unheeded.
