Abstract

The increase in geographical writings in early seventeenth-century England stemmed not only from a desire to understand other civilizations, but also significantly from religious zeal. In particular, the English actively gathered various kinds of information to understand China, and the geographical texts produced in this context played a role in shaping their own national and cultural identity. Since these geographies dealt with aspects such as the politics, economy, religion, education, and customs of other nations, they inevitably included evaluations of China, which in turn served as a reference point for understanding themselves. The perspectives projected by geographical writers in their depictions of China were thus closely tied to their own sense of identity. Although the works of Samuel Purchas, Thomas Herbert, and Peter Heylyn do not present a systematic religious argument, they consistently convey the belief that Christianity is the only true faith capable of grasping universal truth. From this perspective, they portrayed Chinese religion as being filled with idolatry and superstition, thereby highlighting the superiority of Christian truth. At the same time, they also acknowledged the high level of Chinese civilization, particularly through the tradition of Confucian learning and traces of Christian influence. This demonstrates that English perceptions of China—and of the wider world—expressed in geographical writings of the time were complex and multilayered.
