본 연구는 5ㆍ18광주항쟁 관련 연구에서 나타나는 국가와 폭력문제의 재성찰을 바탕으로 5ㆍ18의 정치사상적 의미를 고찰하기 위한 것이다. 본고는 5ㆍ18광주항쟁의 의미는 단순히 국가폭력과 대항이념의 대립문제로 환원되기보다, 군부독재의 폭력에 대한 저항 속에서 드러나는 진정한 국가와 시민적 미덕의 실제적 가능성임을 주장한다. 5ㆍ18에 관한 기존 연구들은 대부분 국가폭력에 대한 비판적 담론에 입각해서 역사적 사실에 대한 진상 규명 그리고 인권과 명예 회복의 문제에 초점을 두는 경향이 있다. 그러나 광주 시민들이 겪은 5ㆍ18의 폭력적 경험을 이해한다는 것은 국가폭력에 대한 부정적 규정 이전에 국가과 폭력, 시민성의 근원적 문제에 대한 재성찰을 요청한다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 5ㆍ18과 폭력, 국가 그리고 시민성의 관계를 포괄적 시각으로 접근한 세 가지 저서를 중심으로 논의를 전개한다. 우선 1) 5ㆍ18의 대중봉기적 성격이 내포한 반폭력과 시민다움의 문제를 파고든 김정한의 연구와 2) 5ㆍ18광주항쟁의 해석에서 참된 국가의 지향과 정치적 존재의 문제를 제시한 김상봉의 철학적 접근을 바탕으로, 시민성을 논하는 데 있어서 국가의 주권폭력과 부정의한 독재폭력 구분의 필요성의 문제를 제기한다. 나아가 3) 최정운의 텍스트를 통해 해방광주에서 형성된 절대공동체의 붕괴와 사회적 분열 양상에도 불구하고 지속된 결사항전의 정신에 담긴 시민적 미덕의 실제적 가능성을 탐색한다.
Abstract
This study aims at exploring the politico-philosophical significance of the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement (5ㆍ18) by re-examining the issues of state and violence often discussed in relation to this event. Rather than reducing the meaning of the 5ㆍ18 to a mere confrontation between state violence and ideological resistance, I argue that it reveals the existential potential of civic virtue, expressed through the citizens’ resistance to military dictatorship and their vision for a true state. Previous studies in the 5ㆍ18 mostly focus on exposing historical truths, restoring the human rights, and reclaiming the honor of the Gwangju citizens, based on a critical discourse on state violence. In order to understand the violent experiences of Gwangju citizens during the 5⋅18, however, it is necessary to engage in a philosophical reflection on the fundamental nature of violence, the state, and citizenship beyond a simple negative assessment of state violence. In this light, this study draws upon three key texts that provide a comprehensive perspective on the relationships between the violence of the 5ㆍ18, citizenship, and the state. It explores 1) Kim Jung-han’s analysis, which delves into the issues of violence and citizenship implied in the popular uprising character of the 5ㆍ18 and 2) Kim Sang-bong’s philosophical approach, which illuminates the ground of state violence and legitimacy, showing why the moral and civic character of the 5ㆍ18 is inevitably intertwined with reflections on the violent nature of the state. Lastly, 3) through Choi Jung-woon’s reinterpretation of the birth and collapse of the “absolute community,” I suggest that the classical lesson of the 5ㆍ18 is the actual possibility of civic virtues seen in the political prudence and moderation that the citizens upheld even in the face of extreme violence from the military dictatorship.
