Abstract
This thesis re-examines the unique characteristics of Christian women-led rural movements in Korea during the 1920s-1930s, offering a crucial complement to male-centric prior studies. Focusing on Kim Hwal-ran, Choi Yong-shin, and Park In-duk, the research highlights their distinct approaches. Kim Hwal-ran, an influential scholar, shaped the Chosun YWCA's efforts, emphasizing farmer enlightenment and illiteracy eradication, later advocating for women's higher education. ParkIn-duk developed a rural movement theory but faced sustainability issues due to reliance on foreign support. In contrast, Choi Yong-shin integrateddirectly into farming communities, leading reforms beyond purely salvational Christian aspects. Ultimately, this research argues for a re-evaluation of these Christian women leaders’ contributions, particularly their empathy for those oppressed under the Japanese Colonial rule.
