Abstract
In ancient Roman education, rhetoric was a core subject, supported by educational training programs known as progymnasmata and gymnasmata. This system of education spread rapidly throughout the Mediterranean world during the first and second centuries CE—the very period when the Gospels were composed—and continued to be widely used from the Roman Empire into the Byzantine era. This study departs from the traditional approaches of source criticism, form criticism, and redaction criticism that have long been used to explain the differences among the Synoptic Gospels. Instead, it approaches the issue of the Synoptic problem through the lens of ancient Greco-Roman compositional techniques—that is, genre criticism. Just as the techniques of Greco-Roman rhetoric can often be found in the letters of the Apostle Paul, the Gospels may likewise reflect the ancient Greco-Roman writers’ flexible compositional devices. Specifically, this study analyzes the compositional techniques of Diodorus and Curtius in the accounts of Alexander's life and compares them with the parallel accounts in the Synoptic Gospels, revealing significant similarities in their literary construction.
