한국에서 개신교 선교와 함께 이루어진 교회여성교육은 19세기 말 국가가 처한 위기 상황에서 구국운동의 일환으로 허용되었다. 이러한 교회여성교육은 선교의 목적만이 아니라 시대적 필요에 부응하는 성격을 지니고 있었기에 교회와 사회의 소통을 지향하는 교육의 한 모델로 평가될 수 있다. 본 논문은 이와 같은 교회여성교육의 특성이 한국 현대사의 격동기에 해당하는 1960-80년대에 어떻게 나타났는가를 여성주의 교육의 관점에서 분석하였으며, 그 분석의 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 산업화가 진행된 시기에 교회여성교육은 소외되고 상실감을 경험하는 도시노동자들을 전도하는 교육으로서 교회성장에 일조하였다. 2. 민주화를 위한 투쟁이 벌어지고 새로운 신학적 논의가 활발하던 시기에 교회여성교육은 여성들의 사회의식과 여성의식을 함양하고 여성 정체성을 확립하는 교육을 전개하여 여성들의 능동적인 사회참여와 교회개혁을 도모하게 하였다. 3. 민족 자주화와 민족 분단의 문제를 논의하고 그 해결을 위한 실천이 요구되었던 시기에 교회여성교육은 여성들의 평화적 잠재력을 개발하여 민족의 역사를 새롭게 형성하도록 기여하는 교육을 강조하였다. 한 마디로, 교회여성교육은 급변하는 시대적 요구에 대응하며 여성의 정체성을 확립하고 역량을 강화하여 세상에서 복음을 증거하는 교회의 사명과 책임을 감당하는 데 일조하였다. 이와 같은 교육 전통을 창조적으로 계승하고 발전시키는 일은 여성들이 한국교회와 한국사회의 개혁에 주체적으로 참여하게 만드는 중요한 작업이 될 것이다.
Abstract
The church women education, which began together with the protestant mission in Korea, was permitted by the authority in the framework of the national salvation movement in the critical situation at the end of the 19thcentury. We can see its own characters in fulfilling missionary goals and satisfying contemporary requisites, therefore we can evaluate it as model of the education which is oriented at communication between church and society. In the article I analyzed from the perspective of feminist education how such characters of the church women education have been expressed from the beginning of 1960s to the end of 1980s in which the Korean society has been thrown into the rapidly changing situation. As results of analysis I make clear three points as follow: 1. In the period of industrialization the church women education contributed to the church growth by pulling alienated and deprived urban laborers into the church life; 2. In the period of struggles for democracy, in which new trends of theologies were introduced into the Korean churches, it promoted the social and feminist consciousness of church women, so that they could establish their identity and participate actively in the social reform as well as the church reform movement; 3. In the period, in which people have discussed about solving the problems of national division and delayed national independence, it has put emphasis on the education to develop the latent powers of church women for making peace and shaping a new national history. To sum up, the church women education has met the contemporary tasks in the rapidly changing society, established church women’s identity and empowered them to be in charge of the mission and responsibility of the church to make testimony of the gospel in the world. It would be an important work, so I think, to succeed to and develop creatively such traditions of the church women education in order to invite church women to active participation in social and church reform in Korea.
