박인덕은 선각적 여성 지도자로 혹은 교육가로 또는 대표적인 친일파로 평가받는 인물이다. 이러한 박인덕을 본 논문에서는, 그녀의 자아실현에 결정적 영향을 미친 개신교 신앙의 구조와 그것이 세계 인식에서 작동되는 방식을 고찰해 보았다. 박인덕의 개신교에로의 회심은 전통과의 치열한 대결없이 개신교가 일방적으로 이식되었다는 점에 그 특징이 있다. 이렇게 이식된 그녀의 신앙의 가장 큰 특징은, 개신교를 삶의 필요에 대한 고도의 효율적인 충족의 체계로 이해하고, 향상주의적 승리주의의 영성을 추구했다는 점이다. 삶의 필요에 대한 충족이라는 신앙 체계는 여성친화주의와 미국인 지원 네트워크라는 하부 구조를 지니고 있었으며, 세계 인식의 틀로써 오리엔탈리즘과 친미⋅반공의 이데올로기라는 안경을 내포하는 거대한 신념 체계였다. 박인덕의 이러한 신앙의 구조는 그녀의 여성이라는 ‘성’적 정체성 확립과 실현을 적극적으로 지지하고 응원했다. 반면 식민지 조선인이라는 민족적 정체성에 대해서는 탈출과 해체의 매개로 작용하여 해방 이후의 분단 정국에서도 친미와 반공을 넘어서는 민족적 정체성을 확립하는 데는 실패했다. 결국 그녀의 신앙은 조선인이자 동시에 여성인 그녀의 정체성을 통합시켜 분열되지 않는 자아 정체성을 확립하는 데에는 실패했다고 할 것이다.
Abstract
Park In-deok is recognized as a visionary female leader, educator, and a prominent pro-Japanese collaborator. This study explores her Protestant faith, which played a critical role in shaping and sustaining her identity. Her conversion to Protestantism was marked by its unchallenged adoption, without significant confrontation with traditional beliefs. She perceived Protestantism as a practical system for fulfilling life's necessities and pursued a triumphalist spirituality rooted in its perceived superiority. Her faith framework integrated feminism, a network of American support, Orientalism, and pro-American, anti-communist ideologies, serving both as a means of empowerment and escape. While it actively supported her gender identity as a woman, it simultaneously undermined her ethnic identity as a colonized Korean. Ultimately, her faith failed to reconcile these dual identities, preventing her from establishing a cohesive and unified sense of self.
