1900년대 신문잡지 미디어와 근대 소설의 탄생 양문규이 논문은 1900년대에 등장한 신문잡지라는 근대적 미디어가 근대소설이 탄생하는데 어떠한 영향을 미치는가를 다음과 같은 세 가지 입장에서 논의하고자 했다. 첫째, 미디어의 ‘테크놀러지’적 성격에 초점을 맞춰 그와 근대소설의 관계에 대한 고찰을 하고자 했다. 둘째, 우리의 근대소설이 서구소설을 수용하면서 얻게 된 점과 더불어 전통소설의 긍정적 계승을 꾀하지 못함으로써 잃게 된 측면을 역시 신문잡지라는 미디어의 기술적 성격과 관련시켜 설명하고자 했다. 셋째, 신문, 잡지와 더불어 한국 근대소설의 발생 과정을 언어의 측면에 초점을 맞춰 살펴보고자 했는데, 언어 역시 넓은 의미에서 인간의 생각과 행동의 척도나 형태를 만들어내고 제어하는 핵심적 미디어의 하나이기 때문이다. 기존의 연구들은 유학생 잡지에 등장하여 내면을 그리기 시작한 단편들이, 서구 소설의 미학적 구성원리를 바탕으로 하여 형식적 완결성을 추구하며 근대소설의 질서를 구축한다고 본다. 그러나 단편 장르가 지향하는 정제된 소설적 구성은 어떻게 보면 전통적 소설 장르에서 끌어낼 수도 있는 다양한 가능성을 제한하고 위축시킨 일면도 있다. 오히려 대중성을 지향했던 신문이라는 미디어가 전통적 국문소설을 계승하여 근대소설로의 발전적 전환을 꾀할 수 있었다. 가령 판소리계 소설은 구어의 오락성을 십분 발휘하면서 다분히 연행 지향적 방식으로 진행하여 서구와는 또 다른 소설적 말하기의 방식을 보여준다. 그리고 이는 신문이라는 근대적 미디어를 매개로 신소설에 부분적으로 계승된다. 그러나 이후 신소설은 부정되고 지식인 중심의 잡지에 게재된 내면성을 중시하는 단편의 양식들이 근대문학을 보증하는 것이 되면서 우리 근대소설사에서 단편양식이 주류적 위치를 차지하게 되는 결과를 낳는다.
Abstract
A Newspaper, Magazine & the Birth of the Modern Korean Novels in 1900'sYang Mun KyuThe goal of this thesis is to study how newspaper & magazine influence on the birth of modern novels. This thesis is to argue it on the as fallow three points. Firstly, this thesis is to focus on the relationship between the modern novels & the 'technology' of the media. Secondly, it is to focus on how the modern Korean novels are succeeded to the former novels and influenced by the West, and also to examine this relating to the 'technology' of the media, newspaper & magazine. Thirdly, focusing on what language is written in novel, it is to examine the development of modern Korean novels. The former researchers suggest that the short story in magazine depicts the interior pursuing the West is the mainstream of modern Korean novels. But the Korean short story restricts to the various aesthetic possibilities getting from the traditional Korean novels. Rather a newspaper toward for popularity than magazine has a potentiality to inherit the traditional Korean novels and to change them into successful modern novels. Traditional Pansori-novel(판소리계 소설) has a vivid spoken language style and the different style of story telling from the West. This traditional novel style is succeeded to Korean modern novels, especially to Shinsoseol(新小說) in a newspaper. But after this Shinsoseol is excluded, and instead of it the short story in the magazine by the intelligent has the main current in the history of the modern Korean novel.
