Abstract

During the modernization period, the presence of short narratives in early modern media serves as evidence challenging the view that the early modern period constitutes a gap or rupture in the history of novels. It also provides significant grounds for recognizing the existence of early modern narrative literature, which actively reflected the socio-historical environment and developed even prior to the advent of Sinsoseol(新小說) and modern novel(近代小說). Whereas previous studies on Korean Style short narratives have primarily focused on their influence on the novel forms that emerged during the 1910s, research on Korean-Chinese and Classical Chinese Style short narratives is indispensable for examining the intellectual foundations and developmental trajectories of narrative literature during this period. Attention to these Korean-Chinese and Classical Chinese Style short narratives materials is meaningful as it facilitates a multifaceted examination of early modern narrative literature, including the media, figures, and traditional narrative styles that influenced new writing practices in the early modern era. This study’s discussion of research trends and the identification of tasks related to Korean-Chinese and Classical Chinese Style short narratives constitutes preparatory work prior to conducting a detailed analysis of these materials. The aim is to assess the achievements and limitations of existing research on short narratives and to propose future research directions. The cataloging of all materials by medium, period, and publication section, as introduced in this study, is expected to provide essential foundational data. This process will facilitate an examination of the flow and succession of narrative literary forms during the early modern period, which has been a central objective of previous research on short narratives. Additionally, it will serve as a crucial resource for confirming the modes of existence of modern narrative literature that coexisted with Korean Style short narratives.
