본 논문은 한국 근대문학에서의 장편소설이라는 양식과 젠더와의 관련성을 검토하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 한국 문학사의 경우 중요한 장편소설들은 거의 신문에 연재되었다. 본 논문에서는 통속성을 띠고 신문에 연재된 장편소설로서, 특히 여성 애독자가 소설 속에 등장하는 경우를 연구대상으로 하였 다. 장편소설 속에서는 여성 애독자가 편지, 연설, 기행문이라는 장르의 속성과 결부되면서 표준어로서의 언문일치체를 규범화하는 역할을 하기도 했다. 이는 신문연재소설이라는 대중 미디어를 통해 이루어졌다. 이 과정에서 소설 속에 설정된 여성 애독자는 내포독자와 실제 독자를 매개하는 역할을 함으로써 장편소설의 젠더 형성에 큰 영향력을 행사하여 독자를 일정한 방향으로 추동하고 있었다. 결론적으로 말하자면, 한국 근대문학에서 장편소설이라는 양식은 ‘독자’라는 매개항을 거쳐 젠더를 형성하였다는 것이다.
Abstract
This study is to examine the relation between gender and novel in Korean modern literature. Most of the important novels in the history of Korean modern literature were serialized in newspapers. I examined the popular novels serialized in newspapers, especially where avid female readers appeared on the scene. In those novels, avid female readers were connected with such genres as letter, speech, travels, as they played the role of standardizing the unification of the written and spoken language through the standard language. All this project were achieved through the mass media of newspaper serial. In that process, the avid female readers in the novels played another role of mediating between implied reader and real reader, exercising a great influence over formation of gender in full-length novels and driving readers to specific direction. My conclusion is that the mode of novel created gender through the medium of 'reader'.
