흄의 인간학, 즉 ‘해부학’은 인간의 근본신념, 도덕관념 등에서 어떤 인간본성 원리가 작동하는지 밝히고자 했다. 그런데 공통적인 믿음이 형성되지 않은 행복(관념)은 ‘해부학’의 탐구주제가 될 수 없다. 그의 네 편 행복에세이는 바로 이와 같은 사실을 ‘아름답게 그리고자(표현하고자)’ 한 시도로 볼 수 있다. ‘해부학’의 도움으로 ‘화가’ 흄은 설득력 있게 보이는 네 가지 행복 가능성을 제시했지만, 사실 그 중 어떤 내용도 진리로 내세우지 않았다. 이와 같은 그의 ‘실천적 행복’은 도덕과 학교현장에서, 학생들 스스로 자신의 행복을 찾는데 적절한 교육방법을 제공할 것이다.
Abstract
Hume’s anthropology, i.e., ‘anatomy’ reveals which principles of human nature operate in fundamental beliefs and moral ideas. Therefore, happiness cannot be the subject of inquiry in anthropology because it lacks a common belief. His four happiness essays can be seen as an attempt to ‘draw(express) beautifully’ this very fact. With the help of ‘anatomy’, the ‘painter (Hume)’ presents four seemingly convincing possibilities for happiness, but none of them were actually set forth as truth. His ‘practical happiness’ like this will provide an educational method in school so that students can find their own happiness.
