혐오 문제 해결을 위한 주자의 ‘적절한 혐오’와 도덕과 교육과정 활용 방안

본 연구는 생물학적 차원에서 역겨워하는 원초적 혐오를 어떠한 혐오로 대응하면 비이성적 충돌을 초래하는지를 질문하면서 시작한다. 너스바움은 특정 대상에게 역겨운 속성을 전가하면서 느끼는 혐오를 원초적으로 혐오하면, 반사회적 경향이 두드러져서 비이성적인 충돌을 일으킨다고 본다. 이는 감정이 이성에 의존한다고 보는 인지주의 감정론자임에도 불구하고, 역설적으로 혐오와 이성을 대립시켜보는 서양의 이성 중심 사고로 논한 것이다. 이 때문에 그는 혐오를 이성과 대립하는 혐오로 대응할 때 비이성적인 충돌을 초래한다고 주장한다. 이로 인해 본 연구는 주자학에 토대를 두고 인지주의 감정론에 걸맞게 혐오를 본성(이성)에 의존하는 혐오로 대응한 결과 격심한 갈등을 초래하는지를 검토한다. 주자에게 혐오는 사람을 사랑하지 않고 꺼리는 부적절한 감정이 있고 혐오를 본성(이성)에 의존해서 꺼리는 적절한 감정이 있다. 부적절한 혐오를 공적으로 적절히 혐오함은 충동에 이끌려서 반사회적인 경향을 드러냄이 아니라 한쪽으로 편벽된 감정이 도리에 벗어난 것은 아닌지를 살펴보고 개선하게 한다. 따라서 논자는 사람을 사랑하는 마음에서 부적절한 혐오를 적절히 혐오하는 방법으로 타인에게 피해를 주는 잘못을 결단코 멈추고 인류애를 실천하는 도덕 교육을 제시한다.
Abstract
This study begins by questioning how responding to primal disgust- originating from biological dimensions-by categorizing it as another form of disgust leads to irrational conflicts. Nussbaum argues that when we fundamentally despise the disgust felt when attributing repulsive qualities to specific targets, it exacerbates antisocial tendencies. This perspective challenges cognitive theories of emotions that associate emotions with reason, as it paradoxically pits disgust against rationality. Consequently, the study examines whether grounding disgust in human nature (reason) as opposed to opposing it leads to intense conflicts. Balancing this with appropriately hating-without impulsively revealing antisocial tendencies-requires a nuanced understanding. Ultimately, the study advocates for moral education that promotes humanity, encouraging individuals to cease causing harm to others through misguided hate and instead practice compassion.
