Abstract
As a prescriptive discipline for improving learning and performance, educational technology develops practical solutions to educational challenges [Editor1] and assesses their effectiveness. Owing to this prescriptive nature, the demand for educational technology research has increased in the current era of uncertainty and rapid change. Commemorating the 40th anniversary of the Korean Society for Educational Technology, this study aimed to reflect on the academic identity of educational technology and explore its future directions. It analyzed 189 prescriptive problem-solving studies published in the Journal of Educational Technology from 2005 to 2024, examining educational problems and solutions and the relationship between them. Over the past two decades, the proportion of problem-solving studies in the educational technology field has gradually increased, accounting for 28.2% of all articles. The most frequently addressed issues were related to instruction, learners, tools, learning environments, systems, and teachers, in that order, with varying emphasis depending on technological and societal changes. Among the proposed solutions, instructional and tool-based approaches were more common than those related to learners, teachers, learning environments, or systems. These results reflect a trend toward addressing educational problems primarily through instruction and tools. They suggest that strengthening the knowledge base of prescriptive problem-solving research in educational technology and promoting interdisciplinary approaches are essential for developing diverse, practical solutions to educational problems.
