Abstract
This study aimed to develop a ChatGPT-based feedback system to support pre-service teachers in instructional design. Their lesson plan coherence was analyzed and then structured feedback was provided. A design and development research methodology was employed to construct the system. Following a literature review, the system was implemented with ChatGPT Builder. Alignment was evaluated among key lesson components, namely objectives, content, learners, methods, media, and assessment. Then, specific strengths were highlighted, and suggestions for improvement were made. Expert reviews (n = 5) confirmed high content validity (CVI ≥ 0.93) and inter-rater agreement (IRA ≥ 0.76). A usability test with 23 pre-service teachers revealed positive responses across all areas, with the average scores above 3.35 on a four-point Likert scale. Users praised the system’s clarity, convenience, and support for instructional planning; however, some noted limitations in the application of feedback to real contexts and the capturing of instructional intent. This study’s significance lies in its empirical demonstration of the potential of generative AI in pre-service teacher education as well as its contribution to enhancing self-directed instructional design competencies. Furthermore, it presents a case in which the educational application of generative AI expands from a simple content generation tool to a design support tool centered on diagnosis, feedback, and reflection. Future research should consider integrating AI literacy with instructional design education to foster pre-service teachers’ critical engagement with AI, developing data-driven personalized systems, and expanding applications to a wider range of user groups.
