Abstract

This study aims to design the instructional model based on embodied cognition theory and to explore changes in learners’ embodied cognitive processes with improving the model through iterative implementation. Using a Design-Based Research(DBR) approach, the Embodied Sensory, Metaphor, & Imagination (ESMI) model was developed through literature review and field analysis. The model was applied for 8 weeks from May to July 2024 with two teachers and second-grade middle school students. Four ‘Macro’ lessons were conducted, each refined through three or more repeated ‘Micro’ lessons. Data included collaborative revisions, achievement scores, artifacts, reflections, interviews, and surveys. Results indicated that the ESMI model consisted of four stages: Awakening the senses, Embodying through sense and imagination, Consolidating through expression, and Advancing embodiment. The model was refined by adding a goal confirmation stage, clarifying terminology, distinguishing gesture use, and enhancing media and technology guidance. Learners expanded sensory experiences, integrated gestures, expressed imagination concretely, increased engagement, and deepened collaboration. The study holds theoretical and practical significance by specifying an ‘Embodied Cognition-Based instructional model’ and confirming its classroom applicability.
