Abstract

The purpose of this study is to study South Korea’s response to the standoff over North Korea’s denuclearization. The theory of nuclear deterrence and security was reviewed mainly in the literature data, and South Korea’s countermeasures and conclusions were drawn after highlighting North Korea’s nuclear development. It will analyze North Korea’s promise to dismantle its nuclear weapons program, additional nuclear tests and threats, and seek political and diplomatic countermeasures and military countermeasures. Despite providing incentives to curb North Korea’s nuclear development and international sanctions, North Korea’s nuclear threat is accelerating. Therefore, South Korea should realize a “nuclear weapons-free Korean Peninsula” through active activities such as strengthening deterrence against North Korea, reviewing the relocation of tactical nuclear weapons on the Korean Peninsula, fostering South Korea’s nuclear development capabilities, building trust between the two Koreas, and creating and promoting a roadmap for denuclearization.
