Abstract

This study investigates iconicity in Korean Sign Language (KSL) by adopting Langer’s (2005) framework of image-producing techniques, shifting the focus from traditional classifications based on referent properties to an analysis centered on the functional role of the hands. Six image-producing techniques—substitutive, manipulative, sketching, stamping, measuring, and indexing—were systematically applied to signs in KSL. For each sign, the underlying image was identified, and the process of image formation was analyzed in detail. The findings reveal that even signs expressing the same concept may differ in their underlying images, resulting in distinct classifications. This highlights subtle aspects of iconicity that cannot be fully explained by simple form–meaning correspondences. Unlike conventional classifier systems that emphasize “what” is represented, the image-producing approach emphasizes “how” representation is achieved, offering a unified descriptive framework for both frozen and productive signs. By grounding the analysis in underlying images, this method provides a consistent and replicable way to describe iconicity in KSL. Furthermore, the approach reflects the visual characteristics of KSL, suggesting broader applications in lexical variation studies, dictionary compilation, and the development of teaching materials for sign language.
