본고는 구한말에서 일제강점기까지 무안 지역을 기반으로 활동한 향촌 지식인 박임상의 삶과 한시에 나타난 내면세계를 고찰한 것이다. 그의 삶과 학문은 가학의 계승, 개방적 학문 수용, 강학을 통한 실천이라는 세 축이 유기적으로 결합된 총체적 과정이다. 첫째, 그는 불의에 저항했던 선조들의 삶을 내면화하여 시대적 위기 속에서 지탱할 정신적 동력으로 삼았다. 둘째, 특정 학파에 얽매이지 않고 여러 스승의 가르침을 수용하여 시대적 과제에 대응하는 면모를 보였다. 셋째, 앞선 두 과정을 통해 정립한 모든 가치를 강학으로 실천하였다. 박임상은 전통 계승자, 학문 수용자, 실천 교육자로서 격동기에 지역 사회의 정신적 버팀목을 한 인물이다. 그의 한시를 통해 이러한 면모를 조명하고 후속 연구를 통해 그의 학문적 영향과 지성사적 의미를 더욱 깊이 규명할 필요가 있다. 이를 통해 중앙 중심의 역사 서술에서 벗어나 지역 지식인의 가치를 재발견하는 데 기여할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This study explores the inner world of Minjae Park Im-sang, a local intellectual active in the Muan region from the late Joseon Dynasty to the Japanese colonial period, by examining his life and Chinese poetry. His life and scholarship represent a holistic process that organically integrates three pillars: the inheritance of family tradition, the open acceptance of scholarship, and practice through education. First, he internalized his ancestors' resistance to injustice, making it a 'spiritual driving force' to navigate the crises of his era. Second, unconfined by a single school of thought, he addressed contemporary challenges by embracing diverse teachings. Third, these established values culminated in his practice of education. As an inheritor of tradition, an acceptor of scholarship, and a practical educator, Park Im-sang served as a spiritual buttress for the local community during a turbulent era. This study illuminates these facets through his hansi, and further research is needed to more deeply investigate his scholarly influence and significance in intellectual history. Such efforts will contribute to rediscovering the value of local intellectuals, moving beyond center-focused historical narratives.
