이 논문의 목적은 한국 수어의 형태와 의미 간의 닮음인 도상성을 중심으로 그 양상과 의미 특성을 밝히는 데 있다. 이 논문의 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 인지언어학적 수어를 탐구하는 것은 자연언어와 수어 간에 공존의 여지가 넓고 상승효과를 극대화할 수 있다. 둘째, 도상성은 인지언어학의 주요 기제로서 언어의 형태(구조)가 의미와 체계적으로 닮은 현상을 가리킨다. 셋째, 수어의 도상성은 다음 세 가지로 나뉜다. 영상적 도상성은 수어의 형태가 사물의 형태와 닮은 것으로 모양과 동작으로 나뉜다. 구조적 도상성은 수어의 형태적 특징이 의미 구조의 양상과 대응하는 것으로 양, 순서, 거리 도상성으로 나뉜다. 비유적 도상성은 수어의 형태가 의미와 부분-전체의 상관성을 갖는 환유적 도상성, 수어의 형태가 의미와 개념적 유사성의 상관성을 갖는 은유적 도상성, 그리고 환유와 은유가 동시에 작용하는 복합적 도상성으로 나뉜다. 넷째, 수어 및 수어의 도상성은 자연언어 및 자연언어의 도상성과 공통성뿐만 아니라 특이성을 갖는다. 수어의 도상적 의미 특성은 환유적 도상성이 활성화되어 있으며, 은유적 도상성 가운데 방향적 도상성이 흔하며, 영상적․구조적․비유적 도상성이 복합적으로 나타나는 일이 흔하다. 끝으로, 수어는 문화 간 변이 현상을 갖는데, 한국 수어를 중심으로 중국 수어, 일본 수어, 미국 수어, 그리고 북한 수어 간의 공통성과 특이성을 규명하는 것이 남은 과제라 하겠다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore the iconic features and semantic properties of Korean Sign Language. The main results are as follows: First, a cognitive linguistic exploration of the features and properties of Korean sign language has the potential to reveal properties shared with the spoken language and so maximize its communicative effectiveness. Second, ‘iconicity’ refers to the phenomenon in which the structure of a language systematically resembles its meaning, this being an important feature of Cognitive Linguistics. Third, sign language iconicity can be classified according to three categories: (1) imagic iconicity refers to signs that resemble the shape or action of the things being described; (2) structural iconicity refers to the formal properties of sign language that correspond to semantic structures. This category can be sub-divided into iconicity of quantity, order, and distance; (3) figurative iconicity can also be divided into three sub-categories, in which the signs have either a metonymic (metanymic iconicity), metaphoric (metaphoric iconicity), or complex (complex iconicity – a combination of the previous two types) correlation with their meanings. Fourth, Korean sign language and its iconicity have both peculiarity and commonality with regard to the spoken language and its iconicity. The semantic properties of sign language are as follows: (1) metonymic iconicity is activized; (2) orientational iconicity is common in metaphoric iconicity; (3) imagic, structural, and figurative iconicity usually occur in a complex way. Fifth, further research needs to be undertaken in examining the peculiarity and commonality of Korean, Chinese, Japanese, American, and North Korean Sign Languages, in order to discover and document inter-cultural variations and phenomena.
