초록
This study investigates how the sign HOUSE in Korean Sign Language (KSL)functions as a productive classifier that encodes both concrete and abstract meanings. By analyzing elicited sign productions from a native KSL signer, the research focuses on how HOUSE is used not only to represent the physical structure of a house but also to express a wide range of meanings including spatial arrangements, household dynamics, economic conditions, and emotional atmospheres. The classifier presupposes architectural components such as the roof, walls, and gate, allowing it to represent parts like the ceiling or roof through iconic form. By positioning the signer under or moving through the classifier, it also distinguishes between interior and exterior space. Beyond structural depiction, variations in handshape and movement convey metaphorical meanings: a large or stable house suggests protection and prosperity, while a tilted or shaking house reflects financial or emotional instability. Through these mappings, the HOUSE classifier expresses complex domestic concepts by combining iconicity with metaphor.
