Abstract
Coercion, as a method of power projection, stands distinct from direct military engagement and seeks to compel adversaries to alter their actions or positions. Central to this strategy is the shifting of outcome responsibility to the defender. This dynamic allows the coercer, potentially North Korea in this context, to escalate tensions when faced with resistance. Given North Korea's nuclear aspirations, understanding these coercion strategies becomes paramount. This study delves into the dynamics of coercion on the Korean Peninsula. To counteract potential nuclear coercion, South Korea should bolster its military preparedness. Among the policy options evaluated, a strengthened trilateral partnership with the U.S. and Japan emerges as a recommended strategy.
