Abstract
The credibility of a witness's statement plays a very important role in judicial decisions. Among them, there may be controversy as to whether witnesses can gain legal evidence if their autism spectrum disorder is present. Although there have been a number of studies on the memory characteristics of autism spectrum disorder over the last 50 years, little is known about whether they can provide accurate statements as eyewitnesses in the criminal system based on their retrospective memories. Therefore, this study investigates the memory characteristics of autism spectrum disorder in view of the fact that autism spectrum disorder accounts for a considerable number of victims or witnesses of crime, and examines how such characteristics can affect the reliability of witness statements. The related knowledge was aimed to increase understanding of investigators about memory characteristics of autistic people and to provide the necessary documents to experts involved in domestic investigation and related policy in order to solve the case and to prepare the measures for victim protection.
