경찰가시성이 범죄두려움에 미치는 영향: 경찰역할인식의 조절효과를 중심으로

초록

이 연구의 목적은 경찰가시성이 범죄두려움에 미치는 영향과 경찰역할인식의 조절효과를 경험적으로 규명함에 있다. 기존의 경찰가시성과 범죄두려움의 관계에 대한 연구들은 결과가 일관되지 않게 나타났기에 경찰역할인식을 조절변수로 설정하여 조절효과를 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 서울시민 543명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하여 자료를 수집하고 분석하였다. 분석결과 경찰가시성이 높을수록 범죄두려움이 높아지며, 경찰활동을 범죄예방활동으로 인식하는 사람일수록 범죄두려움을 적게 느끼는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 절도에 한정하여 경찰역할인식의 유의미한 조절효과를 볼 수 있었다. 이러한 결과는 가시적 경찰활동으로 인해 오히려 범죄두려움이 증가할 수 있음을 환기시키며, 더 나아가 경찰활동이 시민들에게 범죄예방 목적으로 인식될 수 있도록 정책적 노력이 필요함을 보여준다.

Abstract

In this study, I examine how perception about the roles of policing moderates the effect of police visibility on crime fear as well as individual effects of each independent variable. Previous studies on the about police visibility and fear of crime showed inconsistent results, so I tried to find another variable such as moderating variable. In order to achieve above purposes of study, the current research used data with 543 participants. Survey data was collected based on quota sampling method considering gender and age. The findings show that police visibility can increase the fear of crime and that perception to respond crime is more fear of crime than perception to prevent crime. In addition, it was found significant moderating effect of the perception of the police role about fear of theft. Based on these findings, this paper suggests that police efforts are needed so that police activities can be recognized by citizens as the purpose of crime prevention.
