경찰가시성과 범죄두려움의 관계에 대한 메타분석

범죄학 연구는 다양한 범죄학 이론과 학문의 발전을 위해 후속 연구들의 토대를 제공해 주고, 범죄학의 성격과 범위를 재조명하는데 기여한다. 이 연구는경찰가시성 인식과 범죄두려움의 관계에 대한 종합적인 결론을 도출하고자 수행되었다. 2000년부터 2020년까지 국내에서 발간된 9개의 학술지논문을 대상으로 경찰가시성과 범죄두려움의 관련요인에 근거하여 도출된 22개의 효과크기에 대해 메타분석을 수행하였다(k=22). 먼저 경찰가시성 인식과 범죄두려움간 관계의 효과크기는 작지만, 통계적으로 유의미하였다. 세부적으로 경찰가시성과 일반적 범죄두려움 관계의 효과크기는 통계적으로 유의미하지 않았지만, 구체적 범죄두려움과의 효과크기는 작지만 통계적으로 유의미하였다. 이 결과는 다소 상반되게 도출되어 온 경찰가시성 인식과 범죄두려움 간의 관계에 대한 종합적인 해석을 가능하게 한다. 시민들은 경찰활동을 구체적인 범죄예방활동으로 인식하는 것으로 보인다. 따라서 지역사회에 경찰가시성을 높임으로써시민들이 느끼는 범죄두려움을 일정 부분 낮출 수 있을 것이다. 더 나아가 다양한 경찰활동이 시민들에게 범죄예방정책으로 명확히 인식된다면 경찰가시성을 통한 범죄두려움 감소에 긍정적인 영향을 줄 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This study was conducted to make a comprehensive conclusion on the relationship between police visibility and fear of crime. At first, Meta-analysis was conducted on 22 effect sizes from 9 articles in korea based on relation between police visibility and fear of crime. The effect size of the relationship between police visibility and fear of crime was small but statistically significant. In detail, the effect size of the relationship between police visibility and general fear of crime was not statistically significant, but the effect size of specific fear of crime was small but statistically significant. The findings enable a comprehensive interpretation of the relationship between police visibility and fear of crime. Citizens perceive police activities as specific crime prevention activities. Therefore, enhancing the visibility of the police could reduce the public's fear of specific crimes in some extent. If various police activities can be understood by citizens as a clear crime prevention policy, it could have a positive effect on reducing fear of crime through police visibility.
