Abstract
This study aims to examine the life and teaching activities of Jungdang Park Soo Jungdang was a Confucian scholar who devoted himself to the value of Confucianism until the end of his life while studying under Ganjae (艮齋) Jeon Woo (田愚). Considering that the Ganjae school(艮齋學派) is one of the major schools that had a great academic impact on modern and contemporary Confucianism, it can be said that it is novel to discover and review Jungdang, a new writer who inherited Ganjae's junior studies. As to the life of Jungdang, what was his life like? Jungdang can be said to have finished his life while working in Dohak (道學)-- he spent all his life as a devotional scholar. Jungdang, while conducting his teachings, not only inherited his teacher's theory of Ligisimseong(理氣心性論), but also he himself practiced Dohak and Sudojajung (守道自靖) and Wijeongchuksa (衛正斥邪). As to his teachings, it was hoped that the scholarship would be accomplished by endeavoring to do the doctrine with the intention of the saint. So, though it was a very rare case at that time, Jungdang even cited the Buddhist studies, the result of his devotion to raising new young scholars. As to his interactions with literati groups, Jungdang not only organized genealogy, but also participated in publishing anthologies of local literary figures and writing poems for virtuous men of zeal. These activities are a project to find the roots of himself and the writers, and furthermore, they have an influence on the anti-Japanese movement at the time as a way to protect and restore the oppressed country and people. The righteousness of Jungdang is a form that appears in the literati who succeeded Wijeongchuksa (衛正斥邪) of Ganjae (艮齋) through anti-Japanese activities. Through this, we can also see the appearance of Confucian scholars at the time who tried to overcome the absurdity by standing up to the Japanese. Now, the Ganjaehak, which had impact on Jungdang, is handed down again through the literati of the Jungdang school, and the genealogy and size of the school are submitted. Therefore, it is expected that it can serve as a basis for examining Confucianism during the transition period to modernity, mainly from the late 19th century to the early 20th century.
