본 연구는 조선시대 공주의 위상과 역할, 그리고 그 기억의 정치적 의미를 규명하고자 정명공주(1603∼1685)의 생애를 중심으로 고찰하였다. 정명공주는 선조와 인목대비 사이에서 태어나 여섯 왕대를 거치며 격변의 17세기를 살아낸 인물로, 광해군대에는 서궁 유폐라는 고난을 겪었으나 인조반정 이후에는 왕실 정통성과 반정 명분을 상징하는 존재로 부상하였다. 인조대에는 부마 홍주원과의 혼례와 각종 특혜를 통해 위상을 회복했으나, 인목대비 사후 저주 의혹으로 불안을 겪기도 했다. 그러나 반정공신들의 보호와 적통 공주라는 출신은 그녀를 정치적 상징으로 지탱하였다. 숙종대에 들어서는 인조반정을 대표하는 인물로 재조명되었고, 장수와 후손의 번창을 통해 복록의 인물로 기억되었다. 이러한 기억은 풍산홍씨 가문의 번영과 연결되어, 후손들이 고위 관직에 오르고 왕실과 인척 관계를 맺는 기반이 되었다. 영조대에는 혜경궁홍씨의 세자빈 간택으로 외척으로서의 위상이 확립되었으며, 정조대에는 후손들의 성취가 정명공주의 적선 덕분으로 해석되면서 치제를 통해 정치적ㆍ도덕적 상징성이 국가적으로 확인되었다. 순조ㆍ고종대에는 정명공주의 삶이 덕성과 복록의 전범으로 기려지고, 정명공주방은 왕실 가례의 공간으로 기능하였다. 결국 정명공주의 생애와 기억은 한 왕실 여성의 개인사를 넘어 조선 후기 정치 질서와 도덕적 규범을 형성하는 집단적 기억으로 계승되었다.
Abstract
This study aims to examine the status, roles, and political meaning of memory in the life of Princess Jeongmyeong (1603-1685). Born to King Seonjo and Queen Dowager Inmok, she lived through six reigns and the upheavals of the seventeenth century. Though confined to the Western Palace under King Gwanghae, she emerged after the Injo Restoration as a symbol of royal legitimacy. Under King Injo, her marriage to Hong Ju-won restored her standing, though suspicions later placed her in danger. From Sukjong’s reign onward, she was remembered for her longevity and prosperity, a memory tied to the flourishing of the Pungsan Hong clan. In the reigns of Yeongjo, Jeongjo, Sunjo, and Gojong, her descendants’ success and the appointment of her residence as a site for royal rituals reinforced her image as a model of virtue and fortune. Ultimately, her life and memory shaped the late Joseon political order and moral norms.
