Abstract
This paper aims to examine the development and key issues of the memorial oration (祭文) incident that occurred at the first anniversary rite held one year after the death of Lim Heon-hoe (任憲晦), focusing on the responsive aspects of the Jeonjae school (全齋學派). Through this analysis, it seeks to clarify the course of the incident and to elucidate its philosophical-historical significance. The incident occurred when Kim Pyeong-muk (金平默) composed a memorial oration for Lim Heonhoe, in which some expressions seemed inappropriate to Jeon Woo (田愚). Acting as the representative of the Jeonjae School, Jeon Woo criticized the memorial oration and returned it in protest. Initially the dispute was over rhetorical propriety, but soon it expanded into a broader debate concerning the late Lim Heon-hoe’s personal conduct, his stance toward contemporary political affairs, and earlier remarks made in exchanges with Hwaseo scholars. Ultimately, the controversy developed into a fundamental dispute over the legitimacy of Neo-Confucian orthodoxy, and eventually the two Schools branded each other as heterodox (異端). Thus, the controversy over Lim Heonhoe’s memorial oration, which began as a dispute over the memorial text, expanded into a debate over personal evaluation and Neo-Confucian doctrine, becoming a case in which discourse on the legitimacy of Joseon Neo-Confucian orthodoxy and the succession of the orthodox (道統) were crystallized. More broadly, the dispute provides critical insight into the intellectual fragmentation and factional conflicts that shaped the nineteenth-century Kiho scholarly community. It also shows how Jeon Woo used the controversy as an opportunity to launch a systematic critique of the Hwaseo school’s Neo-Confucianism and to reaffirm the identity of the Naknon lineage, thereby underscoring the episode’s broader philosophical-historical significance in late-Joseon Confucianism.
