Abstract

This paper inspects encounters between women's 'oldness' and 'youth' in classical literature in Korea, China, and Japan through themes such as conflict, empathy, and cooperation. Under the feudal system, the elderly women overcame stereotypes associated with their gender, and they utilized their aging, often negatively perceived, as a combat tool to reveal the flaws of the patriarchy. While suppressed by social constructs such as classes and statuses, their female nature entered the stage of neutralization through aging, a process of eternalization, and these women expressed their suppressed desires and diverse emotions through this transition. Equipped with years of accumulated experience and wisdom, these figures became the protagonists of their stories and made impressive achievements. The encounters between the elderly women and the young women sometimes escalated into severe conflicts and involved plot twists through empathy transcending generations. Also, these encounters sometimes resulted in mutual destruction and chaos due to their evil-minded cooperation, and culminated in favorable outcomes through cooperation. Thus, these encounters enriched the world of literature and added literary depth to the works that portrayed them.
