Abstract
This study examines the formation and characteristics of the Japanese migrant community in Thailand, with the aim of exploring its social implications and considering the insights it may offer for Korean society. Currently, approximately 80,000 Japanese nationals reside in Thailand, forming a multifaceted expatriate community. Their reasons for residing in Thailand range from economic activities and education to seasonal stays, medical tourism, and retirement migration. As the motivations and purposes for migration have diversified, the Japanese community in Thailand has undergone increasing segmentation and internal differentiation. Most Japanese migrants retain their Japanese citizenship while residing long-term in Thailand, maintaining a lifestyle that closely resembles life in Japan. This pattern represents a new form of international migration that transcends conventional understandings of immigration. The Japanese presence in Thailand is not merely a matter of demographic scale or shifts in migration patterns. Rather, it provides a case that anticipates social issues Korea may also face, offering insight into broader themes such as cross-border mobility in the age of globalization, the interplay between mobility and settlement, aging and lifestyle in later life, identity negotiation, and the interaction between institutions and migrant communities.
