Abstract

This article traces the formation and transformation of Wu Yong (uselessness) in the “Free and Easy Wandering” (Xiaoyao you) chapter in the Zhuangzi. Two philosophical debates between Zhuangzi and Huizi propose the concept, and later sections of the text-“In the World of Men” (Renjian shi) and the Outer Chapter “Mountain Tree” (Shanmu)-reconceptuatlize its underlying meaning. While previous research has not distinguished Wu Yong in “Free and Easy Wandering” from “use of uselessness” (wu yong zhi yong) in “In the World of Men,” the two exhibit clear distinctions. Wu Yong, in “Free and Easy Wandering,” indicates a rejection of judging uselessness; the term encourages pursuing uselessness as a vital practice for nourishing life (yangsheng). In the first debate, Huizi asserts the uselessness of a giant gourd, reasoning that “everything has a fixed rule” (you wu you ze) and that the gourd’s large size poses it impractical. Zhuangzi refutes the premise and illustrates its value, asserting that “nothing is truly useless.” In the second debate, Huizi shifts a context to a roadside setting where commoners would consider the tree useless, underscoring social consensus in contrast to Zhuangzi’s idea. In response, Zhuangzi differentiates the contexts and contends that something dismissed as useless in one environment may hold value elsewhere. In “In the World of Men,” the meaning of uselessness transforms from external judgment to physical deformity, and eventually to inner virtue (de) by removing spatial context altogether. Wu Yong serves as a strategy for nourishing life but remains open to critique. In the Hanfeizi, Han Fei depicts useless individuals as targets for elimination, exemplified by the story of Guangyu and Huashi, who are executed despite their detachment from worldly affairs. The chapter “Mountain Tree” contrasts a tree ,which lives out its full life due to its uselessness, with a goose that is killed for the same reason. These two images depict the stance articulated in “In the World of Men” and the critique presented in the Han Feizi. Thus, Wu Yong in “Mountain Tree” reconciles the two disparate concepts by introducing the “village of Morality and Virtue” (daode zhi xiang) as a new conceptual space. Although this reintroduces spatial consideration, it differs from the “realm of Nothing-Whatever” (wuyou zhi xiang) found in “Free and Easy Wandering.” In conclusion, (Zhuang Zi) in “Free and Easy Wandering” critiques the very act of labeling something as useless, affirming that everything possesses its own value.
