Abstract
This study aims to comprehensively examine the philosophical structure and contemporary significance of you(遊), a core concept in the Zhuangzi. Previous scholarship has largely interpreted you in terms of free wandering, liberation from constraints, or inner equanimity, thus failing to reveal the holistic structure of Zhuangzi’s thought. In response, this paper analyzes you from ontological, relational, practical, and contemporary perspectives. Ontologically, you does not presuppose a static substance. The transformations of the fish Kun (鯤) into the bird Peng(鵬), the example of the small bird Chi’an (斥鴳), and the metaphor of uselessness(無用) reveal that existence is a fluid process of constant transformation. In the Qiwulun(齊物論), you dissolves the boundaries between subject and object, human and nature, and represents relational openness beyond linguistic distinctions. Furthermore, in texts such as the Dechongfu(德充符), Renganshi(人間世), and Yingdiwang(應帝王), you is shown to be a mode of life that integrates inner fullness(de, 德), generative vitality(qi, 氣), and responsive openness(shen, 神). From a contemporary perspective, this study re-situates you within ecological philosophy and posthuman discourse. Ecologically, you discloses the intrinsic entanglement of human beings and nature, resonating with Rosi Braidotti’s relational ecological ethics and Timothy Morton’s philosophy of interconnectedness. Posthuman thought further illuminates you as a rejection of fixed notions of body and identity, instead highlighting the constant transformations within networks of human, non-human, and machine. This view deeply engages with the perspectives of N. Katherine Hayles and Rosi Braidotti, who emphasize posthuman relationality and the critique of anthropocentric humanism. In conclusion, you is not merely an ancient metaphor for freedom, but a rich philosophical resource encompassing ontological fluidity, boundary dissolution, the integration of de, qi, and shen, and its dialogue with contemporary philosophy. Through this lens, the Zhuangzi is confirmed not only as a classical tradition but also as a living philosophy that critically addresses present issues such as ecological crisis, technological civilization, and the transformation of human identity.
