Abstract
This study examines the narrative changes and ideological implications found in the 2023 edition of Chinese Secondary school history textbooks. Since the Chinese government introduced a state-controlled textbook system in 2017, the history curriculum has undergone several revisions, including new curriculum standards released in 2020 and 2022. These successive changes reflect not merely administrative adjustments, but rather a state-driven effort to systematically incorporate the political ideology of Xi Jinping’s leadership—particularly the promotion of "Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era"—into education. The 2023 textbooks, such as Zhongguo Lishi (8th Grade Volume I) and Zhongwai Lishi Gangyao (Outline of Chinese and World History), emphasize national strategies like "Chinese-style modernization" and a “community of shared destiny for mankind," while reinforcing China's territorial claims over Taiwan, Ryukyu, and Xinjiang. These narratives reflect both domestic and international contexts, such as the intensification of U.S.-China tensions, the rise of nationalism, and the response to Western values, and demonstrate how history education is being utilized as a key instrument for ideological indoctrination and the reinforcement of nationalist education among youth. This paper argues that the recent changes in textbook content are not limited to historical interpretation but serve as tools for shaping national identity, legitimizing political authority, and projecting China's strategic vision. While this study focuses on Secondary school textbooks, further research is needed to explore connections with Secondary school and university-level ideological education, and to compare China's historical narratives with those of neighboring countries. Such longitudinal analyses will help deepen our understanding of how history education intersects with regional identity formation and the evolving political landscape in East Asia.
