Abstract
In this paper, we analyzed the cases in which “i(이)・ku(그)・ce(저)”(hereinafter, “i・ku・ce”) and “ko(こ)・so(そ)・a(あ)”(hereinafter, “ko・so・a”) do not correspond with each other in the columns of a Korean newspaper and their Japanese translations. The study identified five patterns in the examples in which “ko・so・a” were not used where “i・ku・ce” were used, and three patterns were identified where “ko・so・a” were used but “i・ku・ce” were not used. “Ko・so・a” are more often used as “{ko・so・a}+nouns” and demonstrative pronouns than “i・ku・ce”. In contrast, “i・ku・ce” have been more frequently used as adverbial usage than “ko・so・a”. The key difference between “i・ku” and “ko・so” is the presence of antecedents in the text. “Ko・so” indicating antecedents are used only when antecedents are specified in the text. Meanwhile, “I・ku” are used more loosely than “ko・so”. Also, there is another major difference between the two languages in their use of the form「antecedents+{i・ku}・{ko・so}+noun」. When “i・ku” and “ko・so” refer to antecedents, “i・ku” function in the same way as “exactly・just”, whereas “ko・so” are not used because it overlaps with antecedents and leads to redundancy. Considering the interference of “i・ku・ce” in the acquisition of “ko・so・a”, these differences should be made clear to Japanese language learners when they are taught “ko・so・a”.
