Abstract

This paper examines the plural expression patterns in the Shoku Nihongi(續日本紀) from the perspective of Japanese history. Among the Six History Records of Japan, , Shoku Nihongi is the first document in which the writing style in the manner of an imperial edict, Senmyoutai(宣命体) first appeared, characterized by a complex plural expression pattern that mixes Kanbuntai(漢文体), writing composed entirely of kanji(漢字) and Wabuntai(和文体). such as '一二人等', and ungrammatical Japanese of Chinese origin(漢語) plural markers, such as '諸神多知', appear together with native Japanese plural markers. Here are some specific examples of plural expressions in the marked form. First, '等' is used as the most productive plural suffix. This is because '等' is used as a plural marker that can be all inscribed and read by the meaning of Japanese characters(訓讀) as 'たち、ども、ら' according to the diacritical material of Japan(訓點資料), which requires selective conditions according to the grade of rank. Second, '衆' can be conjunct with modifiers and suffixes to indicate plurality, and is characterized by being used only for nouns that have senses, like people. Third, '諸' is used as a modifier to indicate plurality, and is characterized by being conjunct to both objects that have senses and the other objects with no sense. Fourth, 'たち(多知)' and 'ども(止母·止毛)' are used as plural suffixes, and 'ら(良)' is characterized by being used as an adverbial particle. In particular, 'たち' and 'ども' are selectively related to the grade of rank, with 'たち' being more likely to be conjunct to people of higher hierarchy, and 'ども' being more likely to be conjunct to people of lower hierarchy or kin.
