Abstract

This study compares and examines the characteristics and the process of historical change of negative expressions in Japanese textbooks at Korea and Japan of Early 20th century. The analysis data of this study are the "Kōtō-shōgaku dokuhon"of the Government-designated Textbook era and the "Kōtō-kokugo dokuhon"of the Chosen Educational Ordinance period. The results are as follows. First, At Japan's "Kōtō-kokugo dokuhon", attributive base of negation was stably used in the form "ざる, ない, and ぬ" throughout all period. And In the case of continuative base, the frequency of use of "ず" was more than 70% in all periods. But all inflections show the characteristics of modern Japanese in the 3rd period textbooks, so it can be said that the 3rd period textbooks are the beginning of colloquial textbooks. Next, in the case of Joseon's "Kōtō-kokugo dokuhon", the continuative base has a high frequency of "ず" as in Japan. However, the attributive base and the conclusive base show a high frequency of use of "ない" from the first period of Joseon. In addition, the conditional mood and double negatives are more often used in colloquial expressions than in Japanese sources, suggesting that Korean textbooks reflected colloquial expressions sooner than Japanese data. Finally, the general characteristics of negative expressions in Japanese textbooks of Japan and Korea are summarized as follows. In the case of attributive base, "ない" and "ざる, ぬ" are still used stably. In continuative base, "ず" was the most representative form. And In the case of conclusive base, since the frequency of use of "ない" has been high form the first period, it can be inferred that conclusive base has already been unified and stabilized to "ない".
