Abstract
This study implemented a “Japanese Kanji Practice” course incorporating diverse class content and activities to explore effective approaches to kanji learning. It examined learners’ perceptions of class satisfaction, self-directed learning, self-efficacy, and overall course effectiveness. The findings showed high satisfaction with class management and teaching methods. In particular, the selection of engaging materials, the use of word groups sharing the same kanji, and reading-based kanji acquisition were found to be effective. In terms of self-directed learning, tasks such as creating kanji vocabulary lists and writing in kanji practice notebooks had a positive impact. Small-scale tests were also considered useful for managing learning progress. Learners showed active attitudes in planning and completing assignments independently; however, their tendency to search for learning materials on their own was relatively low, indicating a need for improvement in this area. The overall effectiveness of the course was evaluated very positively, especially in terms of improving kanji proficiency, the usefulness of course content, and the development of interest and confidence in kanji learning. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the future design of effective kanji courses and learning activities. Furthermore, ongoing practical research is necessary to develop more effective methods for teaching Japanese kanji.
