Abstract

This review is a proposal to renew the research of Seokjeon Park Han-yeong (박한영), a famous modern monk. Under this premise, in this article, the author proposed to look at it based on the spirit of humanities in order to expand the horizon of Park Han-young's research. And at the same time, he emphasized that Park Han-young should not be limited to the perspectives of Seonunsa Temple, Jeollabuk-do, and Buddhism, but should also pay attention to the perspectives of Korean spiritual history and East Asian intellectual history. In this basic introduction, the following aspects were presented. First, it was pointed out that Park Han-young's practice and thoughts were original. His practice had the characteristics of humility, inclusiveness, and flexibility, which he conceptualized as Won Yong-seong. Second, it was pointed out that Park Han-young's humanities were specifically revealed in Gaewoonsa Temple Gangwon, Buddhist Research Institute, and local travel. This tendency was not limited to Buddhism, but was found implemented in literature, history, philosophy, and oriental studies. Third, Park Han-young's spiritual independence movement was pointed out. Park Han-young's independence movement was seen as the defense of traditional Buddhism, the defense of the Korean spirit, and the maintenance of the duties of the Buddhist monks. Fourth, it was suggested that Park Han-young's research should not be limited to the history of Buddhism but rather be examined from the perspectives of educational history, spiritual history, and intellectual history. I hope that this article described above will serve as a reference for research on Park Han-young, the history of modern Buddhism, Korean spiritual history, and East Asian intellectual history.
