Abstract

This study examines three travel essays authored by Seokjeon (石顚) Park Han-young (朴漢永, 1870-1948). Recognized also as a distinguished literary figure within Korean Buddhism, Seokjeon's travel prose is analyzed here with particular attention to its historical and personal contexts, in an effort to elucidate its distinctive features and literary significance. Seokjeon's travel writings were composed from the late 1910s to the mid-1920s, a time when travel was valued as a means of enlightenment and learning, and when there was a widespread academic effort to define and understand “things of Joseon.” His essays also reflect the heightened sense of national consciousness he developed after the March 1st Movement. Park Han-young's exploration of the identity of Korean Buddhism is also evident in his travel writings. These works offer detailed reports on the Buddhist traditions embedded in the national territory and the status of Buddhism at the time. The sights Seokjeon observed and the oral traditions he recorded during his travels serve as valuable historical materials that supplement Buddhist history and document the state of Buddhism around the 1920s. Additionally, all of Seokjeon's travel essays were published reflecting his intention to provide timely reports on the Buddhist scene and to raise awareness of issues necessary for its development. A comparative analysis of the three essays reveals a stylistic and conceptual shift from the traditional yugi (遊記)-style to a more modern form of gyehaeng (紀行)―style writing, marked by a stronger emphasis on subjective experience and empirical observation. Seokjeon's travel prose thus represents a hybridized literary form that integrates traditional aesthetics, Buddhist contemplative sensibilities, historical excavation, ethnographic observation, and critical historiography―making it a richly layered text within the corpus of modern Korean Buddhist humanities.
