Abstract

This study examines the overall structure and features of the Buddhist journal HaedongBulbo (1913.11.-1914.6., total of eight issues), focusing on the editorials and academic articles written by Seokjeon (石顚) Park Han-Young (朴漢永, 1870-1948). The 1910s marked a transitional period in which Korean Buddhism faced the dual challenge of institutional reform and redefinition of its religious identity. During this time, the Buddhist community responded to Japanese colonial rule externally while seeking internal reorganization and doctrinal clarification. Within this context, HaedongBulbo, published as a successor to JoseonBulgyoWolbo, stood out with its scholastic focus on Buddhist doctrine rather than popular missionary work. Park Han-Young, who played a central role in publishing and editing HaedongBulbo, sought to establish both ideological and institutional foundations for Korean Buddhism that could respond to the demands of modern society. Utilizing the journal's editorial and academic sections, he not only provided critical assessments of contemporary Buddhist conditions but also proposed concrete tasks such as youth education, propagation strategies, and academic inquiry. His reformist discourse, structured around the three pillars of ‘education’, ‘propagation’, and ‘scholarship’, reflected an effort to overcome Buddhist decline through inner reflection and long-term vision. Park’s writings followed the traditional literary style and doctrinal forms of classical Chinese, yet demonstrated a conscious effort to reinterpret tradition in ways that responded to contemporary needs. His editorial work―including critical essays, the translation and introduction of scriptures, and the inclusion of traditional literary forms—aimed to reaffirm the relevance and sustainability of Korean Buddhism. Though these efforts occasionally met with misunderstanding and criticism from within the Buddhist community, Park's responses in the journal reveal his central role in confronting structural issues head-on. In this light, HaedongBulbo served not merely as a platform for publishing ideas, but as a space for Park to reinterpret the past, diagnose the present, and envision the future of Korean Buddhism. By closely analyzing his plans and proposals, this study seeks to assess the journal's role in shaping Buddhist discourse in modern Korea and to illuminate its historical significance.
