서간(書簡)을 통해 본 석전(石顚) 박한영(朴漢永)의 교유 관계와 문예(文藝)에 대한 관심

<동국대학교 석전 박한영 스님 전집 편찬 및 간행 사업단>에서는 여러 자료집․데이터베이스 등에 흩어져 있거나 이전까지 발굴되지 않았던 석전 박한영 관련 서간을 수집․정리하는 작업을 진행하고 있다. 2025년 6월 현재까지 수집․정리한 석전 관련 서간은 총 34편으로, 박한영 발신 서간이 32편, 수신 서간은 2편이다. 필자는 수집된 서간의 탈초․번역을 맡고 있는바, 본고에서는 현재까지 정리된 석전 관련 서간의 현황을 보고하고, 수신인․발신인 및 서간 내용에 언급된 인물들의 정보를 토대로 박한영의 교유 관계를 확인한 뒤, 서간 속 주목할 만한 내용을 조명해 보고자 하였다. 현재까지 확인된 석전 관련 서간의 수신인․발신인은 모두 승려 또는 불교와 관련된 인물들이다. 따라서 종교적 담화를 소재로 하는 서간이 다수 있는 한편, 그 소재가 비단 종교에 국한되지 않는다는 점에서 주목을 요한다. 박한영과 수신인이 나누는 일상적인 안부․청탁․기약․감사․축하․격려․조언 사이에서 특히 당대 문예, 서적과 서화에 대한 박한영의 관심을 엿볼 수 있다. 또 석전 관련 서간에는 당대 문학․예술과 관련된 지식인들의 직간접적인 관계망이 드러난다. 한편 신자료 발굴의 과정에서 확보하게 된 박한영이 해운성조 김형렬에게 보낸 7편의 서간은, ‘(한문)글쓰기’의 창작․비평이 내용의 주를 이룬다는 점에서 주목을 요한다. 김형렬은 응봉정기(應峰正基)의 상좌로, 화엄사에서 글쓰기․글씨와 관련된 불사에 다수 참여하였다. 박한영은 이러한 김형렬의 문재(文才)를 알아보고 또 높이 평가했기 때문에, 그와 함께 글쓰기에 대해 적극적으로 논하였던 것으로 여겨진다. 나이와 지위 고하를 떠나, 우편을 통해 수시로 문장을 교류하고 더 나은 글쓰기를 위해 몰두하였던 두 사람의 관계는 망년지우(忘年之友)이자 지음(知音)이라고도 정의할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
<Dongguk University Seokjeon Park Han-young Compilation Project Team> is collecting and organizing letters related to Seokjeon Park Han- young that are scattered in various brochures and databases or have not been discovered before. As of June 2025, there are a total of 34 written documents related to Seokjeon Park Han-young, 32 sent by Park Han-young, and 2 received letters. The author is in charge of transcribing and translating the letters, therefore this study will report the results so far of the Seokjeon Park Han-young's letters, examining Park Han-young's social relationship based on the information of the addressees, senders, and others who are mentioned in the letter, and will focus on the remarkable content in the letter. Both the addressees and senders are monks or people related to Buddhism. Therefore, while there are a number of written texts based on religious discourse, it is important to note that their subject matter is not limited to religion. Among the daily news, solicitation, promise, gratitude, celebration, encouragement, and advice shared by Park and the addressees, Park Han-young's interest in contemporary literature, books and calligraphy is confirmed. In addition, direct and indirect networks of intellectuals related to literature and arts of the time are revealed in the written writings related to Park Han-young. Meanwhile, Park Han-young's seven letters to Haeun Seongjo Kim Hyung-ryul, which were secured in the process of discovering new historical records, are noteworthy in that the contents are based on creativity and criticism regarding “(Sino-Korean)writing.” Kim Hyung-ryul was a disciple of Eungbong Jeong-gi. He participated in many works related to writing and writing at Hwaeomsa. It is believed that Park Han-young actively exchanged writing with Kim Hyung-ryul because he recognized and highly valued his literary talent. The relationship between the two, who were away from their age and status, frequently exchanged works of poetry through mail and immersed themselves in better writing, can be defined as friends who forget their age and read their minds.
