이 연구는 정동을 활용하여 청년의 동조를 유도하는, 2020년대 북한의 통치기술에 주목하였다. 야간 대규모 집체 공연은 공감각적 스펙터클을 극대화함으로써 관객의 호흡과 심박을 무대의 파동에 맞추려 한다. 통치는 관객을 공연의 일부로 수행시키며 개별 가수의 카리스마, 러시아 샤먼 락 공연 등을 활용하여 주민들의 순간적 감정을 전유하려 한다. 영화의 경우 그간의 금기가 제한적으로 허용되는데 '72시간'의 섹슈얼리티 표현, '하루낮 하루밤'의 스릴러와 샤머니즘적 연출 등은 정동 유발을 통해 청년의 통치적 메시지 수용을 유도한다. 그러나 영상 속 관객의 표정과 몸짓, 북한이탈주민 인터뷰 등을 교차분석해보면, 강한 정동이 감정의 내면화로 직결되지만은 않는다는 점이 드러난다. 반복적 스펙터클은 정동의 역치 상승, 감각적 피로, 탈감정화를 누적한다. 또한 세대·계층별 감각 양식 차이, 실리적 감정 실천, 통치와 일상 감정의 분리는 통치 기획의 균열을 확대한다. 과잉은 순간적 정동 유발에는 일부 유효하나, 감정의 향배는 불확정적이라는 점에서 통치의 딜레마를 징후한다.
Abstract
This study examines how the intensified sensory-based governance under Kim Jong-un seeks to directly mobilize youth bodies through affect. While spectacular performances and films orchestrate lighting, sound, and rhythm to induce momentary excitement and synchronization, such affects do not translate into full internalization of the regime’s intended emotions. Findings reveal that emotions generated within the state’s affective apparatus are often minimized into formalized compliance or diverted toward alternative objects, especially through exposure to foreign media. Repetitive spectacles produce heightened affective thresholds, sensory fatigue, and affective detachment, exposing symptomatic scenes of the precarious continuity of North Korean governmentality. Intergenerational and class-based discrepancies in sensory modalities, pragmatic affective practices, and the widening gap between political emotions and everyday feelings further amplify fractures in the country’s affective politics. Although the regime aims to engineer and appropriate affects, affect ultimately arises within individual bodies, thereby retaining an excessive surplus that eludes complete incorporation and holds the potential for rupture. Between the temporary stability of the system and the slowly expanding cracks within it, the dynamics between youth and the state continue to unfold quietly yet persistently.
