Abstract

The portrait-people network created a strong affect of “loyalty” once intended by authority. However, as the influence of various devices (home education, qualitative projects, censorship, etc.) that supported it weakened, the portrait-people relationship consisted of identifying an individual’s status and relieving desire. Since the collapse of the rationing system, portraits have flexibly constructed various socio-material characteristics that interact with people and cross the intentions of governance. The network and affect change imply the following three aspects. First, the desire of North Koreans to express themselves, which flowed in the abyss, is amplified with environmental changes. Second, the “loyalty” that governance aimed for has largely volatilized, but gender and hierarchical distinctions through portraits remain and appear in various practices. Third, as governance is reduced, “respectful service” becomes gendered, serving as domestic labor for women and as a mechanism for establishing the male identity for some men with a desire for power. Fourth, individual desires are expressed in the line of balancing collectivism and individualism, and the sense is based on an emotional or six-sensory order that is not explained in language.
