초록

This study examines North Korean authorities’ planning for emotional control under Kim Jong-un by analyzing ideological emotions embedded in the five types of ideological education, officially institutionalized following the 8th Congress of the Workers’ Party of Korea in 2021. Emotional control under Kim Jong-un is characterized in the following three characteristics: elevation of loyalty to Kim Jong-un as the core public emotion, maximization of emotions through the sharp contrast between positive emotions toward internal targets with negative emotions toward external enemies, and the invocation of revolutionary forebears’ loyalty to enhance younger generations’ devotion. The significance of this study lies in capturing the aspects of the North Korean authorities’ emotional control manifested in ideological education, thereby revealing the dimension of the political design of emotions—a dimension largely overlooked in previous research on ideological education that has been centered on ideology and education.
