Abstract
This study examines the aesthetic and political implications of participatory education within the paradigm shift of contemporary museum education, analyzing both its potential and its limitations. Drawing on Jacques Rancière’s theory of the “emancipated spectator” and Claire Bishop’s critique of participatory art, the research explores the conditions under which participation can extend beyond experiential engagement to become a form of emancipatory education and political practice. Rancière positions the spectator as an active interpreter rather than a passive recipient, arguing that art and ed- ucation should foster autonomous thinking without hierarchical structures of knowledge. His concept of the “distribution of the sensible” highlights how art can reconfigure existing sensory orders and thereby open new possibilities for understanding and equality in educational contexts. In contrast, Bishop crit- ically assesses how participatory art, when justified solely through democratic discourse, risks reducing engagement to emotional labor and regulated roles. She emphasizes that political art must incorporate dissonance, conflict, and aesthetic tension to provoke critical awareness. This study compares the two theoretical approaches and applies them to a case study: the Artist’s Lunchbox (2019) program at the Seoul Museum of Art. Through this example, the study critically investigates how participatory educa- tion materializes the autonomy of interpretation and interacts with institutional structures. The analysis reveals that while the program encouraged participants’ sensory involvement and interpretive autono- my, their modes of engagement were still shaped by the artist’s curatorial framework and institutional constraints. This suggests that for participatory education to function as a truly emancipatory practice, it must address how autonomy and the redistribution of the sensible are structurally enabled. Ultimately, this study provides a theoretical framework for evaluating participatory museum education at the inter- section of aesthetic experience and political practice.
