Abstract

This study investigates democratization of culture and cultural democracy as the ideological basis of art education drawing on the notion of citizenship. Whereas the existing studies have discussed art education in terms of validity of cultural policy, this study explores art education from the perspective cultural politics that construct the democratic subjectivity. Historically, democratization of culture and cultural democracy respectively reflect hegemony and resistance around art. Art educations that derives from the two ideologies has been proposed as programs to construct subjectivities involved in the symbolic struggles. The notions of artistic citizenship and cultural citizenship as democratic subjectivities can shed a light on art education programs of democratization of culture and cultural democracy. This study utilizes the sociological theory of Pierre Bourieu to understand artistic citizenship and the aesthetic theory of Jacque Rancière cultural citizenship, which reveal the tensions and contradictions inherent in political subjectification of art and art education. This study argues that art education should not simply resolve the tensions and contradictions but take them as the basis of institutional and practical reflexivity. As such, art education can be redefined as contentious public sphere where democratic subjectivity is experimented and performed.
