Abstract

This study examines the current state of film education in South Korea and proposes a sensory-, emotional-, and affect-oriented approach as a critical alternative to the prevailing rationalist paradigms. Traditional film education in Korea has heavily emphasized cinematic grammar, technical proficiency, and narrative structure analysis, often marginalizing the experiential and affective di- mensions that are central to the nature of cinema. In response, this study focuses on Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days (2023) to explore how sensory and emotional elements function within the film and evoke deep emotional resonance in viewers, thereby uncovering its pedagogical potential. Drawing on the philosophical theories of Martin Heidegger’s notion of “being,” Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s theory of “flow,” and Henri Bergson’s concept of “duration,” this research inves- tigates how repetition and everydayness in cinema can elicit nuanced internal transformations and af- fective accumulation. These frameworks allow the film to be interpreted not merely as a product of technical direction, but as a comprehensive artistic medium that intricately orchestrates human emo- tions and perceptions. The study further analyzes the curriculum structures of major Korean film departments, revealing that sensory and emotional training is rarely foregrounded as a core pedagogical aim. Rather, such elements are either indirectly addressed or integrated within broader theoretical and practical modules. To address this gap, the study proposes the introduction of structured courses focusing on sensory-based foundation training, emotional directing workshops, and affective editing strategies. Ultimately, the paper argues that incorporating sensory, emotional, and affective education not on- ly enriches the expressive capabilities of directors and creators but also fosters deeper empathy and humanistic insight. As such, this pedagogical shift can serve as a transformative strategy to enhance the quality and philosophical depth of contemporary film education in Korea.
