Abstract
This study investigates the key themes in photography education research in South Korea and their thematic progression over time. This study identified 179 academic papers and theses, published be- tween 1984 and 2024, by searching for the term “photography education” in titles and keywords with- in the KCI and RISS databases. The dataset was used to examine quantitative trends in publication volume and was further analysed using term frequency analysis and BERTopic-based topic modeling. These methods enabled the identification of major terms and topics, as well as an exploration of how these evolved over time. Academic interest in photography education increased notably from the mid-2000s, reflecting heightened scholarly engagement. In more recent years, however, this trend has gradually declined. Among the most frequent terms were “utilisation”, “programme”, “primary school”, and “art educa- tion”. Topic modeling produced seven distinct thematic clusters, which were labelled as follows: “Photography Education in Art Education”, “Photography Education Systems and Curricula”, “Photography Utilisation in Early Childhood and Primary Education”, “Psychological and Emotional Effects of Photography Education”, “Photography Education for Enhancing Visual Literacy”, “Photography Education as Arts and Culture Education”, and “Literary and Creative Convergence Education Using Photography”. While most of these topics emerged after the mid-2000s, research on “Photography Education Systems and Curricula” was already present from 1984 and remained prominent until the early 2000s. “Photography Education in Art Education” has continued to attract steady scholarly attention and stands out as the most sustained line of inquiry. The other topics, by comparison, were confined to narrower periods and received less consistent research attention. This study identified the main topics addressed in photography education research and their changes over time, contributing to an en- hanced understanding of research trends and carrying academic value.
